PHUKET: A Territorial Defense Volunteer was arrested today (May 20) on charges of raping two Burmese women, one of them just 14 years old, on May 8.

It is alleged that the 44-year-old man, who for legal reasons cannot be named, was driving along the Ao Yon-Khao Khad road in the early evening when he came across a Burmese woman waiting for a local bus. He offered her a lift and she accepted.

As they drove along, he demanded to see her papers. She showed him her passport, demonstrating that she was in Thailand legally.

When they arrived at the restaurant where she worked the volunteer spotted her 14-year-old niece Doen (not her real name) and demanded to see her passport, too.

Doen did not have it with her, so he ordered them both into his car. Terrified, they complied.
The volunteer drove around until it was dark, then parked his car in a lonely spot and raped both of them.

Afterwards he threatened the aunt until she handed over two mobile phones, a gold ring and B5,000 cash. The total value of the extorted possessions was about B22,400.

After that, he drove a little further before dumping them by the side of the road and driving away.
Eight days later, on Friday (May 16), the aunt summoned up the courage to report the rape and theft to police, who were able to identify the volunteer.

He surrendered this morning at 10am at Phuket Town Police Station, and was placed in custody.
It appears that this is not the first time the volunteer has done this, police said. “We have no tangible evidence that this man raped the two women,” Col Arayapan Pukbuakhao, Deputy Superintendent of Muang police station told The Phuket News.

“But from discreet inquiries we have heard reports that he has done this many times around Phuket Town and in the Chalong area.

“Most of the victims didn’t want to report being raped to us, but we heard about someone posing as as a [police] officer, who would stroll around night markets and the bus terminal.

“When he met a beautiful Burmese, he would confront her and demand to check her passport, then take her somewhere where he would rape her and steal her belongings.

“Right now he is in the court cells. We have confiscated his car and are now collecting forensic evidence, as well as examining CCTV footage at the bus terminal. We will wrap up this case as soon as possible.

“We have already taken full statements from the Burmese ladies in case they run away back home for fear their attacker may come after them.”

The volunteer has so far been charged with rape of the aunt and assaulting her in front of others [Doen]; raping a minor; and extortion, compounded by carrying out the crimes at night and while using a vehicle.
