Phuket policemen’s ball sparks complaints

A concert to raise money to develop the new Karon Police Station in Phuket may not go ahead after many local people complained that they had had their arms twisted to buy tickets for the event at B1,000 apiece. Not only that, they said, but some of the tickets they paid for were fakes.

PHUKET – January 2013; The original idea was innocent enough. “We were looking for some additional funds to complete the construction of a proper police station and we came up with the idea of staging a concert so that local people could enjoy themselves and also help us,” said the Deputy Superintendent of the new police station, Pol Lt Col Narong Laksanawimol.

But Kampol Ongkee, a local business owner, told The Phuket News that people in Karon were “forced” by the staff of the concert organiser to buy tickets, and fake tickets were mixed in with the real ones in the books of tickets being sold.

“[The ticket sellers] used the police station name, and showed a letter of permission from Karon Police and a card with the police logo on it when they approached people to buy tickets,” Mr Kampol said.

“They told some people who have Burmese workers or who have large restaurants that they must buy a lot of tickets. Some people had to buy around 10 tickets, among which were fake ones. ”

“I bought one and my relatives bought 10 of them,” said Arunsri Klanma, Village Chief of Moo 1, Tambon Karon.

Col Narong said, “The concert will be on January 25 and the organisers handled the sale of tickets themselves.

“Some local people who have already bought the tickets reported to us that they had not really wanted to pay, so today we had a meeting with the organisers and the money will be returned to those who want refunds.

“They can come to us before January 16 and we will make a list and the organisers will return the money.”

Karon Police Station is one of the two new stations opened on the island (the other is in Wichit). It currently occupies the old security office on the Karon beachfront, while construction continues on a proper police station.
