Pattaya Stuck With Stinking Koh Larn Garbage

Garbage has been piling up on the shores of Koh Larn because Pattaya city officials say they have no place to dump it. The resort island generates an estimated 3-5 tons of garbage daily. Pattaya city officials met to discuss the problem because tourists and locals are complaining about the stinking mess.

PATTAYA – January 10, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; at 1:30 p.m., a meeting was held by Pattaya Administration officials to look for solutions to the problem of accumulating garbage on Koh Larn island.

Attending the meeting were Mr. Pakorn Sukonthachart, the Administrative Assistant of Pattaya; Mr. Sanit Boonmachai, the Deputy Chairman of Pattaya council; and the representatives from all related organizations.

Many tourists and Koh Larn residents have been complaining to officials about the accumulated garbage in Koh Larn, Mr. Sanit said. Currently there is no means to dispose or transport all the stored garbage, which is reaching unacceptable levels, he said.

If Muang Pattaya still does not hurry to solve this problem, it may create negative effect for tourists about Pattaya’s image, especially on the beaches in Koh Larn, he said. Since the beaches are the main lure and source of revenue for business entrepreneurs in Koh Larn, it is critical to maintain a positive image of the ocean and beach areas, he added.

However, Mr. Pakorn said that the problem is the lack of officers on Koh Larn island to operate or take care of the large amount of garbage there. But the Pattaya city adminstration has already prepared to increase the number of officers on that island, he said.

The pressing problem is that Pattaya city has no place to dump the garbage from Koh Larn, he said. A location somewhere in Chonburi must be found for a garbage pond, where Koh Larn’s garbage can be dumped. Meanwhile, the garbage continues to pile up on the shores of Koh Larn.
