Pattaya, the 25th of April 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: The competition, renamed the Chris Kay’s Memorial Tournament after the former Pattaya Panthers captain who was tragically killed in the 2002 Bali bombings, has been a spectacle on the Thai sporting calendar for the last 10 years. This year, upgraded facilities and an expanded competition ensure that the spectacle will maintain its popularity despite rugby being a relatively minor sport in the Thailand.

The 2-day event will feature a male adult 10’s tournament and the return of last year’s successful Junior Division competition (U-18’s). The competition will again feature various schools from the surrounding provinces, expanded to further help the development of the Thailand Rugby Union Association.

This years 10’s tournament will feature 16 teams in the main competition with returning local champions the Southerners, the Old Bangkok Bangers and their Colts returning to the event along with crowd favourites the Bangkok Japanese.

Other Foreign influences at the tournament will include the former British Club under the guise of The Goosers, a new force on the local rugby league scene. The Buccaneers from “Down Under” will return to the tournament for the third straight year, reportedly with a bigger and stronger outfit.

Thailand’s club scene will be represented at the competition with the Thai Barbarians, featuring many national players, set to attend along with the AIA Thai Legends and Youngblood. Teams from the Kasetsart and Bangkok Universities will also attend the competition.

The tournament will begin at approximately 9:30am on Saturday the 1st of May, concluding at around 5:00pm on Sunday the 2nd. Weather for the tournament is predicted to be fine with the newly developed venue ensuring that this year’s tournament will be the best to-date.
