Pattaya, the 18th of May 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: At approximately 4:00am on Friday, police Major Choti Lamom (Pattaya Police Investigator) was notified of an assault on a fellow officer in Central Pattaya. A team of police was immediately dispatched to a boiled rice stand in front of the Foodland department store to investigate further.

Arriving at the scene officers found a large pool of blood on the ground where the assault had taken place, whilst they were informed by witnesses that the victim had already been transported to the Pattaya Memorial Hospital with his wife.

Proceeding to the hospital, officers found the victim, Senior Sergeant Major Banjob Prasertsopha [40] (Pattaya Suppression Police Chief) who was suffering from facial bruising and a severe gash above his left eye, believed to be the result of being hit with a glass bottle. Medical personnel were in the process of transporting the patient for x-rays to determine the extent of the injury head injury.

The victim’s wife claimed that the pair had been eating at the food stand when a group of illegal loan sharks had approached her whilst her husband was in the bathroom. The gang were requesting payment for a loan taken out by one of her friends, a bar owner. The woman had allegedly disappeared leaving approximately Bt6,000 outstanding on a Bt30,000 loan. The officer’s wife had been the guarantor on her friend’s loan and as such was deemed responsible for the remaining debt.

Allegedly the Snr. Sgt. Maj was unaware of his wife’s dealings with her friend and upon returning from the bathroom asked the gang of men to wait whilst they attempted to contact their friend in regards to the loan repayments. Becoming enraged the gang proceeded to assault and bash the officer, reportedly knowing that he was a policeman. With the gang having fled the scene the victim was immediately transported to the hospital by his wife and several onlookers.

Police Major Choti Lamom explained that an investigation had already begun in an attempt to apprehend the violent gang of loan sharks, who had knowingly attacked a policeman also allegedly stealing his mobile phone.
