Pattaya, the 4th of May 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: At approximately 2:30am on Tuesday, police Captain Jamrat Thongjinda (Deputy Chief Inspector of Pattaya Police) led a team of officers to conduct a scheduled traffic checkpoint in South Pattaya. Along with successfully recording several traffic infringements the checkpoint also managed to arrest 6 youths involved with using an illegal drug, whilst a further two youths were arrested after police investigations uncovered a larger drug dealing operation.

Initially officers flagged down 6 youths riding motorcycles in a reckless manner without the use of safety helmets. Upon further investigations of the offenders police suspected that they were under the influence of an illegal drug, later checks revealed that all 6 of the suspects, including one female, tested positive for drug use.

Continuing in their traffic duties police flagged another teenage motorcycle rider down, Mr. Tharadai Phunorng-o [19], once again for riding without the use of a safety helmet. Investigations of his vehicle revealed, along with having no registration he was also found to be in possession of approximately 2.5 grams of the class-1 restricted drug Ya-Ice. Mr. Phunorng-o admitted to being a drug deliverer for Mr. Rang who was operating out of Soi Suni Plaza in South Pattaya.

Closing down the police checkpoint, officers went to further investigate Mr. Phunorng-o’s claims that he was merely a ‘pawn’ for a larger operation. Arriving at Wanna Apartments in Soi Suni Plaza officers successfully apprehended Mr. Rang [15] (alias), after Mr. Phunorng-o had led police to his residence. Police investigations revealed Mr. Rang to be in possession of approximately 10 grams of Ya-Ice including various pieces of drug-using apparatus and numerous pieces of evidence suggesting a larger scale drug operation was being conducted out of the premises.

Under interrogation, Mr. Rang explained that he worked in one of the notorious ‘gay bars’ in Soi Suni Plaza – known to have various establishments soliciting underage boys for sexual services – and had procured the drugs from a friend at his workplace. Mr. Rang stated that he had bought small quantities of Ya-Ice from his friend on several occasions, which he would then separated and sell to teenagers and tourists in the local area. He also admitted to hiring Mr. Phunorng-o for a 1,000 baht wage to deliver the drugs to customers.

Both Mr. Rang and Mr. Phunorng-o have been detained in police custody on charges of drug possession and intent to sell, whilst the 6 youths have been charged with drug use along with being fined for various traffic offences. All 8 offenders will remain in custody awaiting further judicial proceedings to commence.
