Pattaya Police Shoot At Drunken Dane’s Truck

A 57-year-old Danish man was arrested after trying to drive through a police checkpoint near Pratumnak Hill. The drunk Dane was fleeing from an accident in Jomtien. Police shot out two tires on his pickup truck and arrested him. However, one officer was hit by a stray bullet in his knee.

PATTAYA – January 18, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; at 10 p.m., a report of a police officer being injured while trying to stop a pickup truck at a police checkpoint was received by Pol. Col. Thitisas Boon-orn, officer on duty, Pattaya police station, Dongtarn curve sub-branch.

The incident occurred at a police checkpoint set up on the road behind Khao Pratumnak. The 10 Chonburi police officers on duty were alerted that a pickup truck had just collided with a car at Hanumarn curve on second Jomtien road. But the pickup driver fled the scene and was headed in their direction.

The pickup truck was a grey-bronzeToyota Vigo driven by a foreigner. But as the truck approached the checkpoint, it did not stop, and instead drove through the checkpoint, nearly hitting some of the officers. So the police started shooting at the wheels of pickup truck to stop the fleeing vehicle.

But one bullet missed the truck and hit an officer in his left knee. Later, the rescue officers of Sawangboribultharmmasatharn Pattaya foundation rushed the injured officer to Pattaya Memorial hospital. He was identified as Pol. Sgt. Maj. Reuangchai Plaichaiyaphum.

Meanwhile, the truck came to a stop after two wheels were flattened by the gunfire. The driver was arrested at the end of Soi Phratamnak 5. The bullets had punctured the truck’s front and back wheels on the driver’s side.

The driver, who was drunk, was identified as Mr. Yagn Zehngraff, age 57, from Denmark. The police restrained him to investigate to prosecute according to the law.

Pol. Lt. Col. Phongraphee Loysai-or told reporters that the drunken driver drove through the checkpoint and tried to hit the police officers who were working. So the police team on both sides of the road decided to shoot the pickup’s wheels 4 times to stop the truck. But one bullet missed and struck an officer.

Later, Pol. Col. Suwan Cheawnawinthawat, the superintendent of the Pattaya police station, went to visit the injured officer, Pol. Sgt. Maj. Reuangchai, to give his support, and to assist him as much as possible.
