Pattaya Police Nab Necklace-Snatching Teen

An 18-year-old Thai male was arrested in north Pattaya after he and his friend had snatched a heirloom necklace from a Russian tourist. Police caught up to the thieves after the chain on their motorbike broke, but one of them eluded capture.

PATTAYA – January 17, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; at 3 a.m., a fleeing suspect in a necklace snatching incident was arrested by Pol. Col. Archayon Kraithong, Deputy Commander; Pol. Lt. Col. Aroon Promphan, Inspector; and the Pattaya tourism police team.

The suspect was identified as Mr. Decho Yoomthaisong, age 18, living in Chatkaewkao village, Moo 5 Tambon Nong Preu, Amphur Banglamung, Chonburi province. Police seized the evidence that included the motorbike used by the thieves, a black Honda Wave 125, license number NGOR YOR ROR-57 Chonburi.

The other suspect escaped capture, and was identified as Mr. Veera Khamkleung, age 19, address 407/250 Moo 12 Tambon Nong Preu, Amphur Banglamung, Chonburi province. The two suspects are accused of stealing property at night by using a vehicle for convenience in taking the property.

Police also recovered the stolen property, a K gold necklace with cross locket that was reportedly 200 years old. It belonged to the victim, a Russian doctor, identified as Dr. Vachilee Mearvucheanko, age 48.

The arrests resulted after stepped-up patrols by Pattaya police because of recent publicized crimes committed against tourists, mainly Russians. The tourism police were patrolling the area in Soi Na Kleu 20, Pattaya-Na Kleu road, and saw the two male teenagers on their motorbike jerking the necklace from the neck of the Russia tourist

So the police chased the suspects and arrested Mr. Decho, but Mr. Veera escaped. Initially, Mr. Decho confessed to snatching the necklace, and said it was the second time he had done it. The previous necklace snatching involved a foreigner, too, Mr. Deco said.

After initial investigation, the police sent the suspect to the investigation officer of Pattaya police station to investigate further, and will follow up to track down his escaped friend to prosecute according to the law.

Pol. Col. Archayon Kraithong, Deputy Commander, said that the increased vigilance of Pattaya police was because of a commandment from the office of the National Police Bureau that commanded the police in the area of section 2 to mobilize forces to subdue any crime acts committed against the tourists and to take care of their security in life and property for the tourists who came to travel in Thailand to be regarded as a safe area that the tourists could rely on and be satisfied with the taking care of their lives and property by the local police, which has the duration of 30 days for the commandment to be carried out.

The command unit of tourism police had commanded Pattaya tourism police to diligently inspect the areas that have high crime rates against the tourists to serve for the convenience and taking care of security for the tourists, until they can arrest the thieves that make trouble with the tourists in that area and the police will subdue to get rid of the criminals further.
