The robbery had occurred at 02.00 am. on 5th January 2009 when 5 men broke into the house of Mr. Barry Shurman (53) at no. 188/29 Moo. 11, Bangsaray, Sattahip. while he was relaxing there with his wife Mrs. Alisa Dathong [38].

Mr. Shurman, a former American Formula One racing driver, claimed the suspects had attacked him and his wife, hitting him in the face with a frying pan and threatening them with a gun, which later turned out to be a fake. The thieves managed to escape with property valued at nearly 100,000 baht.

At 01.00 pm. today (7th January 2009) Sattahip police inspector colonel Somchai Suntawanik, and his team arrested members of the “Kao Pong” gang who it is believed are responsible for several robbery cases. Police managed to seize Mr. Montree or Mon Chat-inn [23] of house no. 93 Moo. 3 Sattahip and Mr. Wittaya or Joe Mahathai a private in the army, military unit 21, Chonburi. Three other men managed to escape but police have their names.

Today, police took the 2 suspects to Mr. Shurman’s house for a reconstruction of the crime. Police had to be on their guard all the time because Mr. Shurman was angry and wanted to attack Mr. Montree, who had previously attacked him with the frying pan. However the reconstruction was eventually completed successfully.

Mr. Montree confessed that his gang had also stolen many motorbikes in the Sattahip area and their victims were often so scared of them that they didn’t usually inform the police. On the day they robbed Mr. Shurman, they were passing the house and had seen Mrs. Alisa watering the plants in front of her house wearing a big gold chain. They then hatched a plan to raid the house. Mr. Montree used a pan to hit Mr.Shurman causing a wound on his head, while Mr. Wittaya used a fake gun to threaten them. Three more men helped them to search for valuables and take them away.
