The Nong Nooch Tropical Garden in Pattaya hosted this year’s international meeting of the World Palm Association, which declared Pattaya’s palm garden as the best in the world.

In the year 1998, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Tambon Na Jomtien, Amphur Sattahip, Chonburi province was honored by the former International Palm Society, with more than 30 member countries, to let Thailand be the host of the society’s first meeting with 350 members.

This year’s meeting allowed the members to see the palm resources all over Thailand, which favorably impressed all members a lot, and they accepted that the Nong Nooch garden has done an outstanding job in collecting Asian varieties of palm tree that flourish in hot weather, as well as growing difficult-to-find breeds rarely found in any other country in the world.

Mr. Kamphol Tansajja, the director of Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, revealed that the Palm Bangsoon plant of Phuket province is very outstanding, which in the last 20 years was very expensive to grow in countries with cold weather, especially the U.S.A., which grew them, but found it very difficult to take care of. However, the Nong Nooch Tropical Garden has more than 10,000 of this type of palm tree plants.

Another tree that is hard to find is Madagascar’s Timekineretextoberes palm tree. It has the big trunk like a Lan tree, and it has flourished in the weather of Thailand. It has grown to full maturity and is the biggest palm plant right now.

A palm that is very difficult to obtain is the Palm Midiamiaaugust, from Sudan, because it is the dangerous country. But Nong Nooch Tropical Garden managed to bring 3 palm trees out of Sudan, and expanded the breeding to 8 trees, which have grown up to be very beautiful big palms. Such examples are why Thailand is accepted as the center of having the biggest collection of palm tree varieties in the world right now.

The palm varieties that are difficult to find from Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia have small trunks and are very beautiful. Thailand can grow many breeds because Thailand has the proper weather, especially for the palm Valentine or palm capoxilon.

In the past 100 years, people had discovered this type of palm in the forest, but after that, no one found it any more, so it was thought that it had become extinct. But in the last 10 years, 7 trees were discovered, so Nong Nooch Tropical Garden expanded the breeding until now there were 10,000 trees of this type of palm.

The outstanding feature of this type of palm is its green leaves, that when a person stands in front of it and pulls its leaves together, it will look like the person is standing inside a heart shape, which makes for a rare sight. This type of palm greatly impressed the members of the World Palm Association.

Mr. Leland Lyazee, the chairman of International Palm Society and an American, said that 14 years was a long time to wait before the World Palm Association had the chance to return to Thailand for its 2012 international gathering.

He praised the nearly unbelievable accomplishments of the Nong Nooch Tropical Garden by Mr. Kamphol Tansajja, the director of Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, who has help create such an outstanding palm plantation with his genius and wide vision that made so many advances to help the progress of breeding palms.

WPA members from all countries in the world were so impressed that they declared that Thailand has the biggest and the best palm park in the world.

The WPA meetings rotate among countries every one or two years to allow members to go to different locations to study palms and exchange opinions, and to help conserve the breeds that are difficult to find and almost extinct from this world, and also to discover new breeds.

Members were excited to discover a possible new breed of palm at Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, which is the palm Drymophloeus veltchiodes. The association has to first double-check whether the palm is registered or not, and if it was not registered, that means it is the newest breed of palm in the world, found only at Nong Nooch Tropical Garden.

But it was not only the breeds of palm trees that made the best impression on the WPA members, but also the hospitality of the Thai people who always made sure to take care of them and any concerns.

The WPA members also had chance to travel to many Thai national parks, such as Khao Yai national park, and Taplan national park in Prajeenburi province. They also have seen so many wonderful types of palms at Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Prajeenburi that it has inspired the members to come to travel in Thailand as the tourists for next time also, to add to the tourism revenue in Thailand.
