Pattaya, 5 April 2011 [Pattaya Daily News]:  In response to the news that Ayutthaya has been selected to host the World Expo 2020, the Mayor of Pattaya City, Mr. Itthipol Kunpluem has admitted that the council and he have no regrets about the results because they have tried their best effort.

However, the mayor is disappointed for the city and its people.

It could have been an excellent opportunity for Pattaya to host worldwide event because it would increase the income for the local people, he explained.

As one of the nominees, Pattaya city was very excited at the possibility of hosting the event.   In fact the council has prepared an exhibition site of 1,300 Rai in land size. Transportation to and from Pattaya, either by air or sea, is readily accessible for tourists.

In addition, the World Expo could hasten some of Pattaya’s current development projects such as Airport Link and Pattaya New City.

However, in comparison to Pattaya,  Ayutthaya has a richer culture with multiple world heritage sites.

Six provinces were nominated for the title of hosting the World Expo 2020, consisting of Ayutthaya, Chonburi, Chanthaburi, Petchaburi, Chiang Mai and Phuket.

The revenue of the mega-event is estimated to be approximately 61,814 million Baht.   Around 36.99 million people are expected to be at the exhibition.   The economy is predicted to gain about 194,390 million Baht.

Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) will supervise and regulate the World Expo 2020 under the theme, “Balanced Life…Sustainable Living.”
