Pattaya, the 3rd of April 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: At approximately 5:30pm on Saturday, police Colonel Natthawut Suwanla-ong (Pattaya Police Superintendent) and police Lieutenant Colonel Klitsakorn Thongin (Pattaya Police Deputy Superintendent) received a complaint from 50 local masseuses that they had been cheated out of an estimated Bt5.6 million in a scam directed at gaining the women employment overseas. The agent, Mrs. Wanna Daengsa-ad [48] could not be contacted by any of the women and is believed to have fled the area.

In an interview with the masseuse’s representatives, Mrs. Nujiam Jantharaban [35] and Mrs. Ornrudee Khaonok [40] it was revealed that the 50 ladies had each given Mrs. Daengsa-ad an amount of 180,000 baht which was supposed to finance the cost of obtaining the relevant visa, passports and airfare to work in Qatar and Bahrain. Once the money was payed by each individual, Mrs. Daengsa-ad assured the women that the paperwork and trip would be organised by the end of March 2010. Furthermore an agreement to refund all monies to the ladies was signed in the event of any failure to procure the relevant paperwork or the cancellation of the trip.

The representatives explained to the investigating officers that the many of the women had undertaken loans of mortgaged their land in order to take advantage of the seemingly lucrative offer that Mrs. Daengsa-ad presented them. Accordingly some of the workers had been paying the amount in instalments starting at 50,000 baht under various arrangements with Mrs. Daengsa-ad. The women have pleaded with police for assistance due to the dire financial situation that some of them have now been placed in as a result of the unscrupulous scam artist.

Police Colonel Suwanla-ong stated that interviews with the victims had been completed and an investigation into locating and apprehending the offender will now commence immediately.
