Pattaya Ladies Club Meet at Ocean Marina

As a top venue for a lunch meeting the Ocean Marina Hotel at Na-Jomtien south of Pattaya would take a lot of beating, especially if you like boats and the sea. When the Pattaya International Ladies Club (PILC) met there, they also had the pleasure of listening to Mr. Andrew Steel, Director of the Asia Forestry Company, who is also the founder of the “Plant A Tree Today” Foundation in Thailand.

Tuesday 6th October 2009 [Pattaya Daily News]: – The Pattaya International Ladies Club received a bonus, because they were given the second floor dining area, which gave them a stunning sea view of the huge marina with all of its beautiful boats, plus the ocean beyond. As part of their regular charity fundraising some of their members were selling beautiful handmade silver jewellery, and the meeting opened with more charity matters, because their big “Holiday Bazaar” for charity was only two days before this meeting. The big news was that the funds raised amounted to over 328,000 baht, which will go towards various charities

Our PILC ladies are never bored, with upcoming events such as the Bangkok International (Home ware) Fair, an upcoming welfare trip for charity, and an overseas trip to India, planned for February 2010. Closer to home, the well known “Indian By Nature” Restaurant on Thappraya Road is hosting an intensive Indian cookery course, consisting of two lessons per week over five weeks, at a fee of around 5,000 baht.

The guest speaker was Andrew G. Steele, who started his working life as an engineer in the British Navy, and at the age of thirty came to Asia, to work at an oil fired Power generation plant, and was horrified at the amount of pollution. He became interested in conservation and got into the tree growing business 3-1/2 years ago as a Director of Asia Forestry, who produce “Oudh Oil,” from the Agar tree. When distilled, this very precious oil sells at $35,000 per litre and is used as aromatic oil, similar to sandalwood oil, but in spite of the high demand is a secret organisation similar to the diamond trade.

“Andy” was accompanied by local businessman Mr. Steve Johnson, and he is also the Thai founder of the UK based “Plant A Tree Today” Foundation in Thailand, who wok closely with the local PDA Projects, that give practical help to hundreds of poor communities in the Kingdom. Andrew Steel classes himself as a “social entrepreneur,” and his tree growing enterprises are a mixture of commercial and charitable work. All-in-all this was an excellent meeting at a superb location, and the very capable guest speaker, with physique of a film star was very well accepted by our local PILC ladies.

FOOTNOTE: – The PILC provides some excellent social & charitable activities for Pattaya’s women, and they have members from most countries, even including remote places such as Argentina. Club President Gillian Thom announced that their next Pattaya International Ladies Club meeting is a “Coffee Morning” to be held at 10.30 am in the “Royal Varuna Yacht Club” restaurant, just slightly south of Pattaya’s Royal-Cliff Resort, on Tuesday 20th October.
