Pattaya International Music Festival 2009 Delights The Crowds

Pattaya City continued to demonstrate its ability to stage and host major events as the Pattaya International Music Festival was deemed a major success by organisers and spectators alike. The 3-day music event featured free concerts on the 3 stages along beach road, giving residents and visitors a unique opportunity to sample a wide range of genres from the mainly Asian line up, compromising more than 100 artists.

Estimates of the number of attendees varied from 50,000 to well over 100,000. Fortunately the well organised security and the behaviour of the predominantly young crowd prevented any major incidents, particularly fighting between young Thai gangs which have tended to blight such events in the past.

There were some complaints of the extreme sound levels during some of the concerts, especially in the more confined areas. But for anyone familiar with such events in Thailand and the presentation of music in general, this is pretty much to be expected and is a fundamental feature of the experience.

Food stalls and vendors reported a roaring trade and the knock on effect for the City’s restaurant and night life was evident. The generated income from the event may well have exceeded the expected 500 million baht, a welcome boost for a tourist city on the brink of the slow season.
