PATTAYA – September 11, 2014 [Pattaya Daily News]; Mr.Somchai Sumanaskajornkul-deputy director of the marine department-had discussed about enlarging Pattaya beach. The project will involve officers from Chulalongkorn university and Pattaya officers. Its aim is to solve the beach erosion problem and to extend the beach back to its original size.

Mr.Somchai said that the marine department had spent 13 million baht to hire Chulalongkorn marine institution to inspect and plan the scheme to enlarge Pattaya beach after the officials found that Pattaya beach had eroded from 35.6 meters down to 4-5 meters.

The institute had laid 35 meters of sand at a width of around 3 kilometers long from North Pattaya to South Pattaya. Also the marine department had been financed by the government with 430 million baht (2014-2015) and the first year’s budget had been allocated 64,500,000 baht.

Later Ruamkarnkha Marine Construction company was chosen to carry out the project and they were waiting for NCPO approval while they check for any type of corruption or back hander’s. It’s expected that the project will be approved in September and the work will start in December.

Mr.Somchai added that they will take 360,000 cubic meters of sand from the Rayong delta. The sand will be transported by sea. It’s expected that the project will be finished within 18 months.

However the project will enlarge the beach but erosion will continuously happen and it could be back to square one around 15 years time. They will also need to install drainage pipes so that rain water which comes off the road doesn’t wash the sand back into the sea.

However this project will need to be funded by Pattaya and its expected that around 120-150 million baht will be needed. Also the officials will construct a place to store the sand in front of the Dusit Thani hotel. They aimed to create an activity field which is going to cost around 10 million baht.
