The robbery was originally reported to police on 6 October by Mr. Panya Atchasai, (45), the house owner. He told police that the suspect had broken into his house through a window and opened the safe with a key, taking over Bt500,000 and 30 Baht’s weight of gold jewelry, leaving him with only a fake Rolex watch. Mr. Panya assumed that the thief was likely to be Mr.Ton aka Sommai Prannattee, his driver, who had been taking his day off during the time that the incident occurred.

After the report, Superintendent Suppapee Bunkrong set up an investigation team and finally managed to arrange a meeting with the suspect, Mr. Ton, a resident of Tapong , Rayong, at an intersection of Mabkah, Nernprah, Rayong. When Mr. Ton showed up at the meeting point, the police identified themselves and produced a warrant, which had been issued by Pattaya court. Mr. Ton was then arrested under suspicion of robbery and taken to Sattahip Police Station with his bag as evidence, which contained some cash and jewelry.

Mr. Ton finally confessed and told the police that he had it all planned in advance to rob his boss. He said that whilst waiting for his boss after having driven his boss to Bangkok one day, he had a chance to get his boss’ keys to make copies.

On the 4 October, he asked his boss if he could take a holiday to visit his family in Rayong, and he pretended to leave, but on 6 October, he came back while his boss was not at home and used the keys to enter the house. He said he was able to get into the safe because the combination code was written on it. After taking everything except the fake Rolex, Mr. Ton then broke the window to make it look as if he had broken in through it.

Mr. Ton confessed that he had lost a lot of money through gambling on the underground lottery and owed more than Bt100,000. Consequently, he was seriously concerned that the organizers would threaten his life as usually happens in these circumstances. As a result, he felt he had no choice but to arrange the robbery to repay the gambling debts and forestall any threat to his person.
