PATTAYA – March 30,2015 [PattayaDailyNews]; at Pattaya court,Mr.Apichart Thepnoo-head judge of Pattaya court was accompanied with Mr.Chamnanwit Terat-deputy governor of Chonburi- and Mrs.Anchali Pattanasarn-director of probation centre made a statement about the introduction of an electronic tagging system of suspects.

Mr.Apichart said that there had been many cases where the court had to detain suspects for a short period of time which caused the local remand prison to become over crowded. As a result the court intends to use an electronic tag system on suspects who are awaiting a court appearance or are a low risk prisoner and have been sentenced to less than 3 years in prison.

Mr.Apichart said that the project was started on the 30th March and the electronic tagging system will be supported by the probation office. They have 190 tags at the moment and they expect to tag about 30 suspects each day and intend to increase the amount of tags in the near future if the project in proven a success.

Mrs.Anchali said that the probation office had used these tags since 2013 where they started with 200 suspects being tagged in Bangkok and nearby provinces. They have now increased the tags to 3,000 which are now used in 22 provinces.

The electronic tag has a GPS tracking system built in and the probation office can locate any suspect at any time. If the tag is tampered with or the battery goes flat it sets off an alarm which notifies the office who then send a police officer to the relevant suspect. Also if the suspect is under house arrest or a time curfew and leaves the house or breaks the time curfew the tag sends an alert to the office and the police are called to arrest the suspect.
