Mr. Sanit Boonmachai is President of the Pattaya Tourist Boat Club, and also the Parliamentary Member of Pattaya City and acting president of the Security and Peace of Pattaya.

Referring to the type of weather believed responsible for the Phuket tragedy, he said the typical elephant trunk storm the twister usually occurred at night and was difficult to see. Such storms are usually confined to the South, though in October and November they can migrate into the Gulf of Thailand and especially to the area of Chonburi. The storm usually takes 10 minutes to disappear.

Mr. Sanit stated that Pattaya already had an excellent sea rescue service in place. There are 5 groups, each responsible for a particular area: the Jomtien zone, Pattaya zone, Wongamart zone, Krating Lai zone and the Koh Larn zone. They are always ready to perform efficiently at a moment notice and at any time of the day, he added.

Mr. Supamit Sawatdising [44], of the  Sor. Roong Roj Pattaya, a boat service company, commented that in order to ensure the safety and confidence of tourists, all boats must be thoroughly checked. They should be in good condition and be equipped with proper and adequate safety equipment. The boat operating companies must also pay attention to weather reports and never take trips at night. He also stressed that the boatman must never drink and drive.

It is hoped that such advice, if heeded, together with the promise of a fully functional sea rescue service will prevent further tragedies and loss of life and assure tourists that their safety always comes first.
