Pattaya bike week 2009 the best ever

Pattaya Bike Week (PBW), a three-day event, from February 12-14, starting on Thursday with the Jomtien Soi 4, non-stop, rock-n-roll Street Party and Cabaret, with the main concert on 13th and 14th in Chaiyapreuk Stadium, has aspirations of becoming the most popular biking event in the whole of Asia.

This annual bikers get-together, now in its 13th year, has gradually gained in popularity and appeal as its reputation has spread throughout the whole region, as evidenced by the fact that last year it attracted 35,000 people, each night, and over 10,000 motorcycles, not just from Thailand and neighbouring countries, such as Malaysia and Singapore, but from over 26 different countries worldwide.

The event is also supported by major American bike magazines and also by prominent individuals like a prince and the foreign minister of Malaysia. The event has also attracted the patronage of the Thailand Authority of Thailand City Hall and the business community. In this respect, the Pattaya venue outdoes competing biking events of a similar nature in Phuket, Chiang Mai, and other Thai towns, whose bikers will, no doubt, be coming to PBW, themselves.

Effectively, this year’s event will mark the start of a new era of PBW, as it is increasingly attracting more Western bands to the free music concert, with possibilities that next year, when the main venue moves from Chaiyapreuk Stadium, that even bigger name bands, including perhaps even international stars like Rod Stewart, or Guns and Roses will attend, which will really put Pattaya on the map and attract tourists and band followers from the UK, Europe and the US. Indeed, this year, it’s expected that the event will be between 10 and 20 times bigger than previous years events.

The main theme of the PBW event is the Ride for Peace, which the organizers, the Burapha Motorcycle Club (BMC), declare is a celebration of peace in a gathering together of motorcyclists from all over Asia and the rest of the world, in a spirit of camaraderie, regardless of race, creed or club colours. They also extol other worthy causes, such as the anti-drug message and the much needed encouragement for the youth of Thailand to adopt responsible driving habits by participating in the Honda C80 Classic motorcycle movement, which stresses safe riding and the imperative of wearing of crash helmets. BMC is also increasingly seeing the event as a fine way to raise cash for charity.

As the event grows, so does its scope. No longer a mere biking event, it encompasses, over three days and two venues, music of all persuasions, not least some of the best of Western, Thai and Malaysian rock bands, including the acclaimed Carabao and Lam Morrison, but also cabaret acts like magic shows from the Laughing Wizards, i.e. Dr Penguin, the almost famous magician and his sidekick Capt.Treetops, hypnotist Bruce Quinby, a triple chain saw juggler by the name of Marty Legray, a Chinese bellydancer, Kenny the Rock-n-Roll Clown, the Wild West show, an American car display, a fire show and the classic motorcycle display, apart from the obvious celebration of THE name in bikes, Harley Davidson at its own booth, not forgetting the Bikers Circumnavigation of Pattaya on Saturday from about 12pm. There will also be surprise visits by Bangkok supermodels and famous film and TV stars.

We heartily encourage all of Pattaya to join in on this wholly worthwhile celebration and street party, which is intended not only for bikers, despite its name, but literally everyone, especially tourists and families.
