Pattaya’s Royal Garden Plaza Hosts Bid For Screaming World Record

A screaming contest held at the Royal Garden Plaza in Pattaya on 1st August 2009 attracted hundreds of tourists and local people, each trying to beat the world record for the loudest scream. At 1.30 pm, at the Pattaya Beach Road shopping plaza, Pattaya’s Deputy Mayor Mr. Ronnakit Ekasing and Royal Garden General Manager Mrs. Ing-Ong Somprasong hosted the event in which around 1500 competitors attempted to out scream the other, whilst the brave audience kept their distance from the ear splitting sounds. The contestants were judged on the volume of each scream, which was recorded on a sophisticated sound monitoring device, that was shown on a large screen for the audience to witness.

Officials from The Guinness World Records were on hand to witness the competition.

As each competitor psyched themselves up, some running onto the stage before letting out their horrendous sounds, a Russian contender, 33 year old business man Sergey Savelyey, from Astrakhan, was recorded with the loudest scream of 116.8 decibels. However, he didn’t manage to break the world record, currently held by Jill Drake from London, whose scream reached 129 decibels in the year 2000.

Although Savelyey didn’t break the world record, he was happy to walk away with the prize of 30,000 baht saying it was fun joining the contest and being able to represent Russia.

The second loudest screamer of the day was Mr. Ittipol Seemai [30] who managed 114.9 decibels and in third place was Miss Taunporn Leungsurong [21], at 112.8 decibels. Finally the award for the best acting screamer went to Mr. Wisan Supakit wanitchoke, [22], whose scream measured 111.2 decibels.

The contest organizer Somporn Narksuetrong, and general manager of Ripleys, Pattaya’s tourist fantasy business, stated “ We were still not able to break the world record in this contest, but we will keep trying, holding the event every year until we achieve that goal”
