Pattaya, – Wednesday 3rd January 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: – Before sunrise these teams of teams of three per boat headed out off Jomtien’s Wind Surfing Club in small speed boats in a bid to see who could get the biggest and heaviest catch of the day.

This competition was set up by the Thai Fishing Club and this year, saw 66 boats, which was up on last year’s total of 58-boats. These very experienced fishermen were competing for trophies and / or cash prizes, with contestants being judged over five categories. These categories included the biggest team catch, (decided by weight) and the heaviest single fish was divided into various groupings, with the winners being also decided by weight.

Rules stated the fishing area as a designated strip up to 3-kilometers out to sea, and with a considerable length stretching from the Asia hotel in the north down to the Sigma Resort in the south of Jomtien Beach. This is an extremely long strip of fishing water, which resulted in the variety and size of fish that were caught being incredible.

It is probable that the time around sunrise was best, when most of these fish are on the move, but by finishing at 3.00 pm the fishing teams had time to experiment and find the best fishing spots. Conversely, many of the three man teams were extremely dedicated local fishermen, who have been fishing Pattaya’s productive waters all of their lives.

The highest total of fish caught weighed in at 24-kilograms and the heaviest single fish was a quite large15-kilogram. denizen of the deep. As well as many local Pattaya officials, the deputy Mayor, Khun Wirawat Kahki was in attendance to present some of the trophies & cash prizes. This highly successful event will be held again next year, but too our experienced fishermen, fishing is a way of life and they all universally agree, – “All time what is not spent fishing, is wasted.”
