The 25-year-old heiress was due to be arraigned on charges of misdemeanor drunk driving at a Los Angeles court on Thursday in connection with her headline-making arrest earlier this month.

According to city attorney spokesman Nick Velasquez, it‘s not unusual for a first court date to be postponed to a later time.

The arraignment is now scheduled for Dec. 5 in Los Angeles Superior Court. Hilton is not required to appear.

Hilton‘s attorney, Howard Weitzman, said he had requested and been granted a postponement until December 5. Weitzman said he had sought a postponement “in order to determine if and how the case will ultimately be resolved.

“At this point, we are only dealing with allegations, which are why it often takes some time to determine what‘s best for the client.”

The maximum penalty under California law for offense drunk driving is six months jail and a 1,000 dollar fine but officials have indicated it is highly unlikely Hilton would face such stiff punishment for a first offense.

Instead she could be forced to attend an alcohol education program and be stripped of her driving license.
