United States, the 3rd of August 2010: Seeking a record eighth victory at one of his favourite courses, Woods bid for posterity and his first win of the season has been overshadowed by the recent low scoring on the US circuit.

In the past month, there have been two magical 59’s and a pair of 60’s in what is being hailed as a turning point in the game by players, officials and the media alike. Prior to that, there had been only three previous 59s recorded on the PGA Tour with Al Geiberger doing so in 1977, Chip Beck in 1991 and David Duval in 1999.

“Two (59s) in the last three weeks, and before that (there were) only three in the lifetime of the PGA Tour,” South African Els said at his pre-tournament press conference. “I don’t care if you play it on a pitch-and-putt course, to shoot that kind of a number is a milestone in anybody’s career, and you’ve got to give them credit,” he said.

Australian Stuart Appleby fired an 11-under-par 59 to win the Greenbrier Classic on Sunday just three weeks after American Paul Goydos had posted the same score in the opening round of the John Deere Classic.

In regards to Firestone, players agree that scoring on these levels will not be duplicated on what is a tough, tree lined layout notorious for fast running, firm greens. The facts however show Tiger having attained a course record equalling 61, while last year finishing the event with a pair of 65 has to take the title.

“It’s one of the best courses we play all year,” said Woods, who is yet to win a PGA Tour title this season in seven starts. “Everything is right in front of you.” Woods is scheduled to tee off with British world number three Lee Westwood at 13:50 local (18:50 UK time) in Thursday’s opening round at Firestone.
