Pad Ready for Talks With New Govt — With Conditions

BANGKOK, Sept 19 -- The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) which launched marathon demonstrations against the Thai government nearly four months ago is now prepared to negotiate with the new administration under Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat, but with conditions, according to PAD core leader retired Maj-Gen. Chamlong Srimuang on Friday.

The conditions, Gen. Chamlong said, are to bring back ousted, fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to face a prison sentence for graft and corruption charges in Thailand, revoke his so-called red diplomatic passport, and that Mr. Somchai must not intervene in judicial process to assist Mr. Thaksin.

Mr. Thaksin, his wife Pojaman and their three children are now in Britain, seeking asylum. Mr. Somchai, appointed prime minister by the King on Thursday, is brother-in-law of Mr. Thaksin.

Gen. Chamlong — who said earlier the PAD would not give a grace period to Mr. Somchai to prove himself as his past deeds were reason enough for the protesters reject him — abruptly changed his attitude, saying that the new premier had telephoned and asked for negotiations.

The PAD has no condition as to who should mediate for the government, he said. PAD core leader Somsak Kosaisuk said what Mr. Thaksin had told media in Britain Thursday that he was “bullied” by the PAD could be interpreted as demonstrating cowardice on his part, and that the ex-premier did not have the courage to return and stand trial in Thailand.

Pipop Thongchai, another PAD leader, said Mr. Somchai must answer to the public that he would act more than speak by stating whether he will help the deposed prime minister through political means and whether he would intervene in the judicial process to help Mr. Thaksin. (TNA)
