America, the 24th of December 2009 [Pattaya Daily News]: Richard Schaefer, Mayweather’s promoter has demanded that Olympic style drug testing be added to the contract if the fight is to go ahead. The unusual demands are stated to be a result of an alleged allegation by Mayweather’s father that he had heard rumours of Pacquiao’s blood doping.

The Pacquiao camp, led by former Mayweather promoter Bob Arum is refusing to back down to the outlandish demands, stating that he was not going to submit his fighter to rigorous drug testing in the days leading up to a major fight. He has accepted the request for Olympic style testing but not within 30 days of the proposed bout. Arum’s proposal is that the testing be done in January, 30 days before the fight and immediately following the bout, allowing both fighters to fully focus in the 30 days leading up to the event.

Schaefer has retorted to the statements coming out of the Pacquiao camp by declaring: “I believe Manny Pacquiao has not been properly briefed on the procedures. This is not like they’re taking a gallon of blood. It’s non-intrusive. They’re taking less than a teaspoon.” Arum continued by explaining that it was not the testing that he was objecting to, but the distraction that is caused by it leading up to a major fight.

Some media sources have suggested that the Pacquiao camp is accusing the Mayweather contingent of insisting on the blood testing for the sole reason that Floyd is afraid of fighting Pacquiao. Supposedly, they are using the unusual proposal of Olympic style drug testing as a way to back out of the proposed boxing match, which will see both fighters rewarded handsomely regardless of the outcome, if it goes ahead.

There is still time for both parties to reach an agreement however; a contract will have to be agreed to and signed by both parties before mid-January in order to give the promoters a chance to arrange press tours and solidify sponsorships for the event. Currently Ladbrokes (sports betting website) has Mayweather the favourite at 4/7 while Pacquiao carries odds of 5/4.
