Pacquiao-Margarito Fight Given the Green Light in Texas

The much-anticipated fight between Filipino Manny Pacquiao and disgraced Mexican boxer Antonio Margarito has been given the green light after the later was re-licensed by the Texan boxing commission recently. Margarito will fight Pacquiao in his first bout since serving a one-year ban over illegal hand wraps used in his 2009 fight with Shane Mosley.

United States, the 31st of August 2010: Pacquiao, who is competing for an eighth world title in an unprecedented eighth weight class, stated that he was not bothered by what had happened to Margarito in the past. “That doesn’t concern me,” said the southpaw, widely considered the sport’s best pound-for-pound fighter. “We will give him one chance to prove he is not doing bad. We are just human, we are not perfect.

Despite allaying concerns regarding Margarito’s use of illegal hand wrappings for his 2009 WBC welterweight bout with Shane Mosley, Pacquiao has requested that two of his own team monitor the disgraced boxers wrapping prior to their November 13 super welterweight bout at the Cowboys Stadium in Texas.

Speaking on the Margarito incident, Pacquiao stated, “Of course he knew that (he had illegal wraps). He is just making alibis but it’s unfair to him that we don’t give him another chance (to fight). He badly wants to fight again and to entertain people.”

Pacquiao’s request did nothing to worry Roberto Garcia, Margarito’s new head trainer, who revealed, “I know the wrapping that I do and every single time the commissioners have always congratulated me for the good job that I do. I have no problem with Manny himself being there when I am wrapping.”

Speaking with the use of a translator, Margarito himself moved to dismiss his past indiscretion stating that everything is behind him, “We are now in the present. It’s time to show everyone I’m still very good. Nobody wants to miss this fight. It’s going to be a great fight. I also want to thank the commission of Texas for re-licensing me.”

Regardless of Margarito’s history, he is certain to provide Pacquiao with a stiff challenge come November 13. The boxer currently holds a significant height and weight advantage over the Filipino, while being known for his brutal training regime and aggressive style.

“He’s stronger and bigger than me so I have to seriously focus and study all of his style,” said Pacquiao, who won a seat in his country’s national congress since beating Ghanaian Joshua Clottey in his most recent fight in March.
