One Phuket ‘Black Water’ Source Getting Cleaned Up

Steps taken to solve the problem of black water flowing across the sand and into the sea at Karon Beach have improved the quality of the water.

Phuket Vice-Governor Jamroen Thippayapongtada, who visited the area on Wednesday (May 7) said the the water is cleaner, and no longer “rotten”.

Looking at the Nong Harn [reservoir] we saw a lot of black sediment and green algae. But there were also a lot of tiny fish and crabs living in the klong [flowing from Nong Harn] which indicates that the water is not bad. The water in Nong Harn is cleaner and clearer than before.”

The battle is not over yet, however. V/Gov Jamroen said. “As a temporary solution, we dredged the klong, added oxygen, built an over-flow dam and installed a net to trap garbage so that it can be extracted before the treated water is released into the sea.

“In the medium term we will close up the area where the water flows from the waste water treatment and pump out excess wastewater, about 3,000 litres, into a small settlement basin to allow the sediment to settle out.”

V/Gov Jamroen noted, “The treated wastewater will have a high level of nitrogen which will cause the green algae to grow fast. When the green algae floats on the surface of the water, it will look scummy but actually it is not bad water.

Suphachai Nawikapoom, Academic Specialist from the Environment Department said “In February and April, we found that the average BOD [biochemical oxygen demand – a measure of organic pollution] in the water was about 4 milligrams per liter which is not bad.

“But if we do not let the water flow, the green algae will grow for a period and then die and this will cause bad water.”

For the long-term solution, the existing, overworked wastewater treatment plant will need to be expanded. An application is to be made to the Environment Fund for a loan to cover the cost of this.
