Bangkok, the 27th of August 2010: The 24-year-old injured man, Mr. Jetsada Jankrajang, is said to be in a critical but stable condition inside the Rajavithi Hosptial, suffering from severe shrapnel wounds to the head and body.

Reportedly, the explosion occurred at approximately 11:00pm, merely meters from the site of the July 30 attack, which wounded one person. Shortly prior to Thursday’s incident witnesses observed the victim talking to another man on a motorbike, who has since been pulled in for police questioning.

Immediately following the incident, police Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) officers inspected the area for further devices and allegedly found traces of an M-67 grenade believed to have been used in the attack. Along with the one victim, approximately 6 nearby windows of the King Power Shopping Complex were shattered and the pavement in front of the building damaged as a result of the blast.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Santhan Chayanont stated, “I cannot speculate on the motivation. But it could be an attempt to stir chaos in the area.” He also denied reports that an M-67 grenade was the cause of the explosion stating that it was unconfirmed what type of device was involved.

In the July 30 attack at the same location, one unidentified local recycling trader was critically wounded by a device planted in a rubbish pile at the site. In that instance the device is believed to have been an intricately rigged, remotely detonated bomb formed from a grenade.

One suspect has been detained, under the emergency decree, in relation to the July attack, however, at present is still denying all involvement with the incident.
