Dr. Petchpong Kamchongkitjakarn of the Erawan Centre’s Emergency Service identified the victim as Mr. Janekit Kladsakorn, 48. He died en route to hospital and was declared dead on arrival after suffering serious wounds from shrapnel in his neck.

Among the 22 injured, four are seriously wounded, said Dr. Petchpong.

Witnesses said the explosion occured about 3.30 am, when an explosive device fell into the Government House compound which the protesters have occupied since August 26. The PAD’s Initial investigation showed that the projectile was likely to be a military issue M-79 rifle shot into the compound from outside.

After the attack, PAD volunteer guards blocked all entrances to Government House and strictly barred media from entering the compound.

The protest alliance core leaders called an urgent meeting to find measures to prevent future attacks and pressed the authorities to find the assailants.

PAD protesters occupying Government House have been hit by a number of small blasts, injuring many demonstrators and security volunteers.

The protesters seized and vowed not to leave Government House until the government steps down.

They accuse both the present and former government of being corrupt and a proxy for ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. (TNA)
