One dead, 111 missing in Volga River boat accident

MOSCOW, July 10, 2011 (AFP) - A cruise ship accident on the Volga River left one person dead and 111 others missing on Sunday, an emergencies ministry official said, revising up the number of people left unaccounted for.

The Bulgaria boat was carrying 188 passengers and crew members when it sank in the central Russian republic of Tatarstan, local emergencies ministry spokeswoman Svetlana Lebedeva said by telephone.

“The fate of 111 people remains unknown,” the spokeswoman said.

Officials had earlier said that 97 people were missing.
