Pattaya, March 19th, 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: The combination of lack of rain, which has been 60-percent below average since September, and a rare drought that has dried up rivers has affected 86 out of 88 cities Guizhou in Province and other parts of China’s Southwest with over 17 million people going short of drinking water and farms across a vast area at risk.

Emergency water supplies are being distributing in the drought-stricken areas but artificial attempts to bring rain by seeding clouds have not met with success. The only ones to benefit from this crisis are Chinese water supply companies.

Although China frequently suffers from extreme weather conditions, and severe droughts happen regularly, the present drought is especially acute.

Meteorologists expect the drought will intensify with the onset of the dry season, according to AFP and the state-run Global Times.’
