Okinawa‘S Miyako Island In Tsunami Alert

Japan, perennially prone to earthquakes, hit late last month by a 6.9 earthquake on the Noto peninsula Central Japan, suffered a further quake last week as another quake hit Central Japan which injured 12 people Coming on top of these recent quakes, there were a further two earthquakes, which struck off Okinawa at 10:46 am local time, today, triggering a tsunami alert.

The two strong earthquakes registering 6.2 and 6.7 on the Richter scale. These resulted in forecasts that 50 centimetre waves would likely strike Okinawa’s Miyako island, but after an hour and no tsunami, the warning was lifted. However, further aftershocks have been predicted for next week, which could well precipitate a tsunami.

Across the world in Northern California, a quake registering measuring five on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale struck about 170 northwest of the state capital Sacramento on Wednesday. No fatalities were reported in any of the three recent earthquakes.
