Argentina, the 31st of August 2010: Investigations into the brutal murder of six victims in Buenos Aires has led to the arrest of Marcelo Antelo [22], following a shootout with local authorities on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old is thought to have pledged his allegiance to a spiritual figure known as San La Muerte (Lord of Death). In his alleged pact with San La Muerte, Marcelo is said to have promised to kill at least one person per week in exchange for the protection and prosperity of his family.

Authorities are said to be charging Marcelo, also known as Marcelito, with six counts of murder, although investigations into his involvement in several other unsolved cases is being conducted. Unfortunately given the nature and location of the crimes, victims were poor, marginalised people living in an area where even the police often dare not venture, the Argentine media have barely reported the cases.

“The murderer had made a pact with San La Muerte, by which he had promised one murder each week to obtain protection for him and his family,” police sources told AFP news agency. Five of his alleged victims have been identified, but a sixth was burnt beyond recognition.

San La Muerte is known to have a large following in Argentina, particularly in the countries vastly overcrowded prisons, shantytowns and rural northern regions. Followers of the spirit ask for favours, such as victory in a fight, the death of an enemy or prosperity in their business dealings.

Argentinean spiritual beliefs have largely been adapted from tribal northern cultures and a mix of ancient Roman Catholicism.
