Officer Dies in Shootout with Ya-Ba Dealer near Pattaya

A police sting operation on Thursday, led to the death of one police officer with another seriously injured in a shooting outside the Harbor Mall in Laem Chabang. The suspect has a string of prior convictions which include robbery and murder.

Laem Chabang 4th March 2010 [Pattaya Daily News] Thursdays sting operation carried out by Police at 10.00 am led to a shooting which left one officer dead and another seriously injured by a gang member dealing in Ya-ba in front of the Harbor Mall, Laem Chabang, Sriracha, Chonburi in the direction of Pattaya.

Before the incident occurred, Police Lieutenant Parinya Ieamkamon a Laem Chabang Police Investigator headed the sting operation in order to apprehend the suspect after receiving information of a Ya-ba deal that was to take place.

On receiving a report of the shooting, Police Major General Niwat Rattanathammawat, Region 2 Police Deputy Commissioner, Police Major General Thanet Phinngammueng, Chon Buri Police Commissioner and Police Colonel Theeraphol Jandaluang, Chon Buri Deputy Police Commissioner, along with an arrest warrant and a task force of 100 officers from different stations to search the area in order to arrest him for the murder of an officer of the law. The suspect was identified as Suphatchai Kaewchanin [24] who has a previous conviction for robbery and murder in Chon Buri.

The officer’s blue Isuzu pickup was found parked across a gold Toyota Vigo belonging to the offender with both Senior Police Sergeant Major Thinnakorn Jantra and Senior Police Sergeant Major Watcharaphon Pimjan lying beside the offender’s vehicle. They had been shot several times leaving Police  Sergeant Major Jantra with fatal injuries.  Senior Police Sergeant Major Seksan Thammanitiwet, the driver of the police vehicle who was lucky to have escaped injuries, transferred the injured officers to the hospital. The offender’s vehicle which was badly damaged with bullet holes and a shattered wind screen, was left by the offender as he fled in the direction of Sukhumvit Road.

Mr. Sanong Thomjangreed [43] a Laem Chabang factory worker who was riding a black Honda Wave motorbike registered; Chor Ngor Tho-350 Chon Buri was shot at twice as he was robbed of his motorbike by the offender who then made his escape through Laem Chabang Industrial Estate.

Senior Police Sergeant Major Thammanitiwet made his report stating that as he drove in front of the offender’s vehicle, the other two Officers jumped from the vehicle in order to apprehend the suspect, whilst at the same time, the suspect pulled out a gun shooting through his wind screen at the officers several times. The driver of the Police vehicle shot back which led the suspect to run off along Sukhumvit Road, whilst shooting and robbing Mr. Thomjangreed of his motorbike.

On searching the offender’s vehicle, 4,000 Ya-ba pills were discovered on the driver’s seat which has been kept as evidence. Police will continue their investigations until the offender has been arrested and charged. It is possible that he may face the death sentence.
