BANGKOK – August 25, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]; the results of a recent study by a U.S. researcher of a strange new disease was discussed by the consultant of the chairman of the Infectious Disease of Thailand Association.

Commenting on the study was professor Dr. Amorn Leelarassamee of the subject branch of Infectious Disease and Science of Medicine in Tropical Areas, Faculty of Sirirat doctor, Mahidol University.

A joint study had been conducted with Thai and Taiwanese researchers working with Dr. Sarah Brown, an American scientist of allergy disease and infectious disease.

The disease they studied has symptom like HIV, but is not the infectious disease. It often occurs in adults who are 50 years old. This new disease still didn’t have a name.

Professor Dr. Amorn said that this new disease creates a defect in immune systems. The disease was reported about 4 years ago, and was discovered primarily in patients approximately 40- to 50-years-old, he said.

The patients suffer from have weak immune systems and because the disease is not curable, it requires them to take medication the rest of their lives.

Dr. Amorn said, “The specialist of infectious disease tried to find the cause of this disease and discovered that on one level, the cause of this disease may come from a substance that stimulates the leucocyte to impair the immunity system that causes the defective immunity.”

Two other university faculty commented on the disease that was reported in a 2004 article in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Professor Dr. Theerawat Hemajutha, the teacher of theScience of Medicine subject, faculty of doctor, Chulalongkorn university said that he already read the report of the research and study of Professor Dr.Yupin Suphuttamongkol from Sirirat hospital, and Dr. Kamolwan Juttivorakul from Chulalongkorn hospital.

The report found that patient Asia and Thailand suffering from the disease had symptoms similar to HIV. However, the cause was from the bad lymph glands that created a different strain of immunity, causing the body to start attacking its own immune system, and reducing the body’s ability to fight against germs.

The research was conducted in Thailand and Taiwan, with patients divided into four groups:
1) 52 patients who had symptoms similar to tuberculosis but it was not TB;
2) 45 patients who had the infectious disease from a fungus;
3) 9 patients with tuberculosis;
4) 49 patients with lung tuberculosis.

A control group of 49 healthy people was also studied for comparison.

Researchers found that in the first two groups, they could not find the cause of their diseases in 12 people of the 97 patients.

In the healthy control group, one person of the 49 had a substance of resistance to interferon gamma in blood.

Commenting on the research, Professor Theerawat said, “In this case is one type of the defective immunity disease but is not HIV, or it can be called the strange disease because in some patients they still could not find the cause.”

He added that the patients had been healthy as children, but developed the disease as adults.

“This disease was not occurred since they were children, but they just had a problem when they grew up that they had abnormal immunity,” the professor said.

“In some of the patients, they found that there was a substance in the body to resist interferon gamma in blood, but in some of the patients they still could not find the cause.”

Professor Somsak said the defective immunity disease may have been inherited when the patient was born.

Or when the person grew older, he or she may have exposed to an infection such as HIV, a virus or a chemical substance.

But he said in some patients, doctors cannot find the cause of this mysterious new disease.
