New Drug Flooding Europe Likely To Hit Thailand Soon

Thailand is warned to be on the look out for a new drug going by the unlikely name of ‘miaow-miaow’, (not to be confused with Mau-Mau, which was considerably more lethal) aka M-Cat and ‘pussy’. The drug is currently sweeping Europe and will soon, no doubt, hit these shores.

March 24, 2010, [Pattaya Daily News]: the British Government has issued warnings related to ‘miaow-miaow’ aka mephedrone, which apparently is akin to amphetamine, after the deaths of five people directly linked to the drug. As yet the drug hasn’t been banned in the UK, but it is expected to be shortly, in which case it will probably be classified as a Class B drug, like cannabis and amphetamine, although the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs has yet to make a classification decision.

This is different to Thailand where amphetamine is classified as a Class A drug and carries considerably stiffer penalties than in the UK, where offenders are only likely to receive five years for possession and fourteen years for dealing. The most severe penalty for dealing vast quantities of ya-ba or methamphetamine here is the death penalty. The attraction of the drug in the UK is expected to heighten after it is banned and according to The Times Online, one 21-year-old dealer said banning mephedrone would increase his profits. He also told the The Times Online that mephedrone is currently the second most popular request from his young customers around Gloucestershire, after cocaine, and he is looking forward to the higher prices.

So far those who have died as a result of taking the drug include a woman of 24 from a village in North Yorkshire, two teenagers from Scunthorpe, Lincs, as well as two others. According to The Times Online, Chris Grayling, the Shadow Home Secretary, said: “The Government was warned years ago about the risks posed by legal highs and these steps should have been taken long ago.”

The introduction of ‘miaow-miaow’, or ‘pussy’ to Pattaya would add considerably to the related problems inherent here already. Since the vast increase in drug trafficking caused by the stepping up of production by the Burmese rebels and Thai hill tribes to buy arms with the proceeds to counter the threat posed by the Burmese military’s incipient assaults, the incidence of drugs, especially ya-ba, flooding into Pattaya has seen a considerable increase. Bangkok, too, would also suffer from the introduction of miaow-miaow, as the vast surge in drug busts, recently,  show how great the illegal drug problem is there.
