For all the women who have been waiting for another type of birth control, the wait is finally over.

A new implantable contraceptive device is to become available in the near future. On Tuesday, the FDA approved Implanon, a progestin-only contraceptive that is effective for three years after it is implanted in a woman‘s arm. The implant is a small piece of plastic no bigger than a toothpick.

Implanon will be the only under-the-skin birth control device available to women in the United States.

FDA officials believe that this will be a far more effective means of birth control than the pill. The problem with the pill is that women need to remember to take it at the same time every day, leaving room for error. The implant eliminates this.

The implanting and removal of the Implanon rod is quite simple. It is inserted under the skin on the inside of the upper arm and will last for three years. Just imagine, not having to worry about birth control for three whole years. All the woman has to do is remember to get the rod removed at the end of the three years.

Of the 942 women who tested the device, there were no difficulties in removing it. In other countries the device has been around for up to eight years, and there have been some reports of the rod moving and getting lost. If this was ever to happen, the rod can be detected using ultrasound or MRI.

A big concern, no pun intended, is that the device has yet to be tested in obese women. Obese women tend to metabolize the drugs in contraceptives differently.

Some side effects that may occur while using this contraceptive are irregular menstrual bleeding or no periods at all while using it.

No word yet on how much this contraceptive will cost, but it’s expected to be less than 1000 USD. If you compare that with the price of birth control pills for three years, roughly 1800 USD, it’s considerably cheaper and less of a hassle.

Women can expect to see the devise become widely available in 2007.
