BANGLAMUNG – February 18, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; At 1 a.m., a report of a thief stealing a donation box from a Family Mart and running away was received by Pol. Maj. Capt. Jakkrit Jandakam, detective of the shift, Pattaya police station. The police went to check the scene with Pol. Lt. Col. Kiartisak Saton-oi, vice director of suppression division; along with patrol police and police volunteer forces.

The incident occurred in the Family Mart on the top of soi 4, Phra Tamnak Road, Nong Prue. Arriving at the scene, police discovered the suspect had been captured 200 meters from the shop by the cashier and bystanders who had chased him down soi 4.

Police recovered the 1-foot square donation box of the Rak Thai foundation containing 2,000 baht in cash. Police kept the stolen box for evidence and took the suspect to the police station.

Also giving her testimony at the station was the Family Mart manager, identified as Ms. Janpassaorn Prasertsawat, 30 years old. She told police that she was familiar with the suspect, who had slept in front of the store. He had previously bought alcohol twice, and after drinking the alcohol, he would go to sleep at the same place.

The theft of the donation box occurred when Ms. Janpassaorn was arranging goods near the cashier. When the manager heard the bell ringing to signal someone entering the store, she just thought it was an ordinary customer and not check to see who it was.

When she heard the bell ringing again, she turned toward the door, and saw the suspect running away down the soi with the donation box. So she called a nearby taxi motorbike driver to help her catch him. They captured the suspect and notified the police.

The suspect appeared to be about 20 years old, nationality unknown. The police tried to question him for 2 hours, but he didn’t say anything, not even a little bit. Officers tried using hand gestures, but still could not communicate with him.

The police assumed the suspect was deaf, or just pretending to be. They presumed the mute committed the theft because he wanted money to buy liquor. The police detained him to prosecute, and will have him examined by a doctor to see if he really is deaf.
