Sattahip, 10 December 2010 (PDN): At 04.45 am the Sawang Rodjanatham Foundation Radio center was notified that a motorcyclist had been injured when his bike drove over an uncovered manhole on the road in Soi Lungpho, Moo6, Sattahip.

At the scene, which was in darkness, officials found that three manhole covers had been stolen the previous night ( 9th December ). A black and pink Honda Wave 100 motorbike was found in one of the open manholes with its rear end projecting upwards from the road surface. Nearby was the driver,  Mr. Saman Meepium [35], a waiter at the Khrua Tawan Restaurant waiter in Soi Lungpho, who was bleeding from the mouth and complained of discomfort in his chest.  A deep open wound was found under his chin and he was rendered first aid before being transferred to Sirikit Hospital, Sattahip for treatment. His wound required 10 stitches.

Mr. Meepium explained that he was driving his bike from the restaurant to buy some whisky for a customer at the 7-11 in Sukumvit Road. He was familiar with the road and he wasn’t driving fast. Also the road was not lit, and he had his headlight on full beam, and so he didn’t see the open manhole in the road. The front end of his bike dropped into the hole and his chin hit the concrete edge. He considers himself lucky to be alive.

Reportedly, the Moo 6 Village governor, Mr. Natchai Saengsri, had placed safety barriers around the empty manholes but it was found that all the barriers had been removed, presumable by the thieves, who had come back to remove more of the covers.
