SATTAHIP – August 2, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]; At 5:30 a.m., Pol. Lt. Col. Rattapak Sopap, investigation officer of Sattahip police station, received a report of a burning motor tricycle and a traffic death on Sukhumvit Rd. Km. 68, Sattahip-Pattaya route, at J junction moo 9, Sattahip, Sattahip, Chonburi.

Police rushed to the scene and saw a wrecked blue motor tricycle, LPG installed, registration code Sor Kor 1621 Chonburi. The tail of the tricycle was destroyed, and the bike’s front part was on a traffic island. A fire was burning from a leak in the gas tank. Spraying water to extinguish the fire were officers from the Public Disaster Prevention office of Udomsak district municipality.

A woman’s body was lying near the tricycle on the traffic island. The unidentified 54-year-old woman was a passenger on the tricycle. She worked as a Buddhist morning merit curry merchant and lived at house 100/11, moo 9, Sattahip, Sattahip. The motorcycle driver was Mr. Santi Janngam, 63, living at house number 73/64 moo 5, Sattahip, Sattahip. He was slightly injured, with a bruise on his chin.

The van that hit the tricycle was parked about 20 meters away, its front end severely damaged from the impact. It was a white Toyota commuter van, 99006 Maptaput company, registration code Hor Thor 3371 Bangkok. The driver, Mr. Chalermwut Kamphulan, 25, was not injured, along with commuters in the van.

Mr. Santi, the tricycle driver, said that the dead woman was his client who sold her curry at J junction every morning. Before the accident, he had picked her from the morning market to take her home. When the tricycle reached a junction, he signaled to turn right before he turned into the road line 332.

However, the van behind them was going so fast it hit the tail of his tricycle hard, he said. The tricycle bounced on the road island and crashed into the cement traffic sign pole, breaking apart and catching fire. The impact also hurled his passenger from the tricycle and killed her.

Pol. Lt. Col. Rattapak Sopap photographed the crime scene for evidence and took the drivers for questioning at the police station. When their testimonies about what happened did not match, he filed initial charges against the van driver for careless driving resulting in the death of another person.
