The two-hour pageant was held in Warsaw‘s Palace of Culture, a skyscraper built as a gift by Joseph Stalin‘s Soviet Union, spruced up with red carpets, flowers and Miss Czech Republic took the Miss World crown today in Poland‘s capital Warsaw, the first city in ex-communist East Europe to host the pageant. Tatana Kucharova, a blue-eyed blonde wearing a tight-fitting white gown, fought back tears as the Miss World sash was draped over her shoulder and a glittering crown placed on her head.

blew kisses to the crowd and hugged her competitors, 103 women from five continents, but made no comments. Seventeen-year-old Miss Romania, Ioana Valentina Boitor, was first runner-up.

In keeping with its conversion to capitalism, Poland is aiming to cash in on Miss World, billed as television‘s most watched event. A think tank calculated exposure from the pageant would help draw 5 million extra tourists to the country by 2010.

Miss Australia, Sabrina Houssami, was second runner-up.

Feminists dismiss Miss World, founded in 1951, as a sexist “cattle show”, yet organisers expected more than 2 billion people in 200 countries to tune in. Miss World moved to Warsaw after three years in the southern Chinese resort Island of Hainan.

To keep the pageant‘s image wholesome, artists drew a sash over Warsaw‘s city symbol, a half naked mermaid, to conceal her breasts in promotional posters.
Kucharova is the third Eastern European to win the Miss World crown. The first, Poland‘s Aneta Beata Kreglicka, was one of three moderators at the Palace of Culture on Saturday.

Tatana was born in Trnava and grew up in Opocno. She is a High School student, her future ambition is to attend university, graduate, have a modelling career which she hopes will enable her to travel; and to be a good parent one day. Her hobbies are: Tennis, volleyball, horse riding, ice skating and many other sports, she also enjoys dance and listening to music with a nice melody. Tatana likes to spend time with her many pets, she has: cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, a bird and a turtle. Favourite food is Chicken. Personal motto would be ‘Always be an optimist’.

The Miss World Organization claims that the final of the competition is the world‘s largest annual television event, and viewershipis expected to touch 2 billion – or almost twice the population of India! The chairman of the Miss World Organisation said that Poland is a wonderful location for Miss World 2006. “The people
are tremendously warm hearted and they are rightly proud of their beautiful country. Poland is sure to welcome the contestants.”

The details of the tour on which the Miss World contestants will be taken are still in the planning stages, but they would most probably get a chance to enjoy Poland’s Baltic coastal beaches in the north, to the Mazurian Lakes or the rocky Tatra mountains in the south. The beaches would definintely offer the chance of a deluge of bikini-clad photographs of the Miss World contestants, and we will strive to bring you as many of the hot pics as possible. Miss World 2005, Unnur Birna Vilhjalmsdottir, recently visited Warsaw and toured the city’s historical sites such as the Chopin Monument and the Old Town. “I am sure that the girls will love to explore and experience the many sites that Poland has to offer,’ said Unnur Birna Vilhjalmsdottir. “With the snow at this time of year, it  reminds me of my home in Iceland but I am definitely looking forward to coming back when it is warm and green.”
The Miss World contest and programme has served a useful purpose around the globe under the banner of its ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ programme. The contests
have always directly led to a dramatic interest in tourism to the country where the contest takes place.
