Bangkok, 1 November 2010, [Pattaya Daily News]: a white Toyota mini-van, bearing the sign Panjanawit School, hit the side barrier of the 2ndExpressway on Oct31 and turned over after the driver had tried to stop because passengers had smelt leaking fuel. Continuing to slide, the vehicle then actually broke through the barrier and plunged onto Rama 6 Road, below, where it caught fire.

“When my police team, assisted by Ruam Katanyou Foundation, arrived at the scene, in front of the Samsenwitthayalai School, we found a white Toyota mini-van completely in flames with passengers crying for help,” Samutprakan Pol.Lt. Wathit Itthakul, the notified officer, informed PDN.

The relief team had then apparently managed to obtain some water with which they extinguished the fire after 20 minutes. Inside, they found eight dead bodies and nine injured passengers. Six of these had suffered 70% burns, including the driver, Mr. Wirot, Mr. Somchai, Mrs. Janjira, Mr. Weeraphong and an unidentified man and boy, who were all sent immediately to Ramathipbadee Hospital. The remaining less badly injured crash victims were sent to the Ratchawithee and Phramongkut Hospitals, respectively.

“The injured passengers said to me as I took them to hospital,” Head Rescue Officer Bin Banluerit told PDN, “that they were travelling in a rented passenger van on the Paknum-Morchit route that had just entered the expressway. Suddenly, they smelt a strong smell of fuel and told the driver. He tried to pull over, but was travelling too fast and hit the barrier about 100 metres further on. The mini-van then turned over and then crashed through the barrier, falling to the road below.”

Further police investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances of the fatal accident, PDN understands.
