Meth Addict Makes Desperate Grab For Purse

A 23-year-old Thai man in the throes of addiction snatched a purse right in front of a Sattahip grocery store owner. He was chased down and quickly caught. He later told police he was fired from his job and had no money. But he wanted to use meth, so he was seizing any opportunity to steal.

SATTAHIP – October 31, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]; at 8:30a.m., a report of a purse snatcher being caught by a grocery store owner was received by Pol. Maj. Capt. Ubon Wongkamchai, detective officer, Sattahip police station. He notified Pol.Col.Chanapat Nawalak, the police station director, then went to check the scene with the crime detectives and suppression operation forces.

Waiting for the police was the victim, Mrs. Lawan Kongkapan, age 51, the owner of a grocery store at room 11, the Department of Industry, Sattahip naval base, moo 2, Sattahip, Sattthip, Chonburi,

At the scene, police found Mrs. Lawan and several residents trying to restrain the suspect, identified as Mr. Thitipong Jarernchai, age 23, living at 53/40, moo 6, Sattahip, Sattahip.

Witnesses identified him as the man who snatched the purse of the owner of the grocery store, with the evidence of a leather belt purse containing 4,500 baht in cash.

The police made the suspect take a urine test, with the results showing purple urine, indicating the presence of drugs. The police had the suspect re-enact his crime at the scene before sending him to Sattahip police station. They charged him with snatching another person’s assets.

During questioning, Mr. Thitipong told the police that he had been fired from his job so he had no money. But he wanted to use meth, so he pretended to shop at a grocery store, but he was really looking for chances to steal property.

Then he saw Mrs. Lawan lying on her bed chair, and noticed she had left her purse on a table. But at the time, her daughter was there so he did not have the opportunity.

He then left the store, but later returned and acted like he wanted to buy something. Then he grabbed the purse in front of the owner’s eyes. But he was chased by the owner and nearby residents, and immediately caught.
