May This Day Bring Many Opportunities For Kindness

Thirty years ago I was sitting at a bus stop waiting for the bus to take me to work. As I was looking around, I saw a homeless woman asking people for money so she could buy some food.

It was early in the morning and most of the people simply ignored the woman or gave her a dirty look. There was one exception though – an older, well-dressed business lady who looked as she was in hurry to have a meeting in an office nearby. When approached by the panhandler, the business lady looked straight into her eyes and quietly asked, “How much will you need?” I couldn’t hear what the poor woman said but watched as the business lady pulled several bills from her wallet and calmly placed them in the woman’s hands.
I don’t know if the woman actually used this money for food or for some other purpose. What I do know is that I witnessed two completely different reactions to the same situation. I saw people who were either afraid or annoyed or distrustful. And then I saw this business lady who was not afraid and treated the homeless woman as though she were a sister. I decided then and there that, even though we have to be careful in this world, I would rather be like her, the business lady.

May this day bring us many opportunities for kindness.
