PATTAYA – April 1, 2014 [Pattaya Daily News]; Pol.Lt.Col. Anuchet Kartsomboon (Investigation officer of Pattaya city police station, Dong Tarn Curve branch, Chonburi Province) was notified that there was 1 Thai male tourist who had disappeared in the sea off Jomtien beach, opposite to Soi 8, Jomtien beach road, so he coordinated with the sea rescuers of Pattaya city together with the officers of marine operation, Sawang Boriboon Tharmma Satharn Pattaya Foundation and divers to rush to the scene.

At the incident the officers found a Mrs Boonhiang Thamontri aged 43 who is the mother of the missing victim and some of his relatives who were crying. The missing person was identified as Mr Chonthawat or Bank Thamontri, aged 19. The relatives told the officers that in the afternoon Mr Chonthawat and over 10 relatives had travelled from Chonburi to Jomtien beach to celebrate Mr Chonthawat’s graduation from high school.

Mr. Arthit (one of the relatives) said that he and Mr. Chonthawat decided to walk out to sea along the buoyancy pontoons when suddenly it went very windy and the sea became very rough which caused Mr. Chonthawat to be tossed into the sea by a large wave where he disappeared under the water. Mr Arthit said he didn’t dare jump in to rescue him because he could not swim, therefore the other relatives jumped into the sea but they could not find Mr. Chonthawat so they notified the police.

Later it took divers more than 2 hours to find the body of Mr Chonthawat which was found beside a buoyancy pontoon around 50 meters off the beach.

However, previously there have been 2 teenagers in Jomtien and 1 foreigner near the Dusit hotel on Pattaya beach who had met the same fate after they had walked along the pontoons and been knocked into the sea by the waves and drowned. There have been many complaints that the new style pontoons are dangerous because tourists are tempted to walk along them out to sea where they are putting their lives at risk. Many people have asked for the pontoons to be changed to a safer style.
