Early this morning, 13 March at 3.40 . with his undercover team, conducted a sting operation, arranging to buy Yah Bah(amphetamines) from Mrs Mod over the phone. The police made an assignation to meet the dealer in Moo 9, Soi Chaiyapoon, off Pattaya 3rd Road, but she failed to turn up. The police team then called her big boss, Mr Gai (Chicken) saying Mrs Mod had been robbed, at which point, he became insanely angry and, assuming that it was an in-house betrayal, grabbed his gun and rushed out on a vendetta.

Mr Gai (Somwang Reungjit), 32, from Lopburi, riding a motorbike, accompanied by three of his gang, arrived in the soi, where the police were in hiding. Mr Gai then recognised a member of the plain-clothed police team who suddenly appeared and approached him, at which point Gai realised he’d been tricked. He then pulled his 9 mm automatic from his waist band and shot at the police, but missed. He then attempted to escape on foot, whilst his accomplices rode off on Gai’s motorbike, abandoning their boss. Gai then attempted to hide in a wood behind Excite Pub.

The police then blocked off the area and managed to arrest Gai, still armed, with his gun containing 8 bullets in the magazine. When he was later investigated, he claimed that he’d not intended to shoot the police maliciously, but had done so purely in self-defence, as he was notorious, had a police record and feared that the police were out to kill him. He maintained he was also out of his mind on Yah Bah at the time and not in control of his faculties and also enraged at what he believed to have been a betrayal by members of his gang. The police are continuing their investigations and hope to arrest the other gang members.
