Major Rail Hub

Pattaya city and the department of railways have discussed a mega project to turn Pattaya into the main rail hub in Eastern Thailand.

PATTAYA – October 5,2015 [PattayaDailyNews]; at Poolman Pattaya hotel, the Department of Railways held an exhibition to develop the area in BangSua district to be the hub of the eastern railway project. Prof Manop Pongsatad- , Mr.Sompat Suwapit- supervisor of the project-, Mr.Itthipol Khunpluem-Mayor of Pattaya-, Mr.Bundit Siritanyong- deputy president of Thai-Chinese culture association- and Mr.Sanpetch Suppabawornsathien- director of Eastern hotel association- attended the opening ceremony.


Assistance Prof.Manop said that they aimed to develop the railway station to be an ASEAN HUB station that will connect to all parts of Thailand such as Chiangmai, Huahin, Pattaya and Khonkaen and other countries by 2047.


The Thai government wants to develop railway transportation in the Eastern parts of Thailand by 2022 with a monorail from Chachoengsao-Klongsibkao-Kaengkoi and Chachoengsao-Si Racha- Laem Chabang-MabTapud- Rayong. In addition they aimed to develop Pattaya as the main hub in BangSue district under the concept of Transit Oriented Development because Pattaya is the city of tourism and is centrally located.


Mr.Itthipol said that Pattaya had already passed a railway study in the past that proved that there could be a sustainable transportation system in Pattaya. There is also continuous development going on to ease traffic congestion such as the Pattaya tunnel which is currently under construction. However they need to survey local people’s opinions to see what affects and impacts it has on them before the project gets the green light.
