Madonna Malawi adoption reports are false

Madonna did not adopt a baby from Malawi as was initially claimed by a government official. Although Kylie Minogue took after her in writing children‘s books, she doesn‘t apparently take after adoption hero Angelina Jolie. Her publicist denied any adoption, stating the pop singer is on a private (read: for charity work) visit to Malawi.

The Material Girl arrived in the African country‘s capital city Lilongwe early Wednesday, and she drove to Mphandula, a village 12.5 miles outside Lilongwe, where she is funding the construction of the Raising Malawi center to feed and educate about 1,000 orphans.

On Wednesday, Malawi government spokesperson Adrina Michiela claimed Madonna had chosen a one-year-old boy for adoption after requesting officials to select 12 boys prior to her arrival. “She asked us to identify boys only, which we have done after visiting four orphanages in Lilongwe,” Michiela had said. The official also claimed that until two weeks ago Madonna had wanted to adopt a girl. But, according to Madonna (through her publicist), “none of that is accurate.”

“I can confirm Madonna is in Malawi on a private visit … She is building an orphanage and child care center and is involved in other initiatives geared toward helping children orphaned by AIDS through the Raising Malawi organisation,” said Liz Rosenberg, her publicist.

“She has not adopted a baby, despite reports that she has,” added the publicist, to make things clear.

Apparently Madonna is content with the publicity drawn by the false adoption report, as it serves her charitable cause of helping Malawi children. “I think that anything that brings attention to the country is fine with her, even if it‘s information that‘s not correct,” claimed Rosenberg, who checked the facts directly with Madonna after the false news broke. “She wants people to pay attention to Malawi and to the one million children who don‘t have parents and don‘t have care there.”

Madonna participates in a program to provide care for an estimated 1 million children who are without parents in the southern African nation, many of them suffering from AIDS. She recently stated she wants to raise some 3 million US dollars for the children. Malawi is a poor nation of 13 million people who are dependent on tobacco exports.
