Pattaya, 22 November 2010, [Pattaya Daily News]: At 7.30pm, yesterday evening, Pattaya and Jomtien Beaches were crowded with tourists and local residents who came to the sea to celebrate with their families and friends. Some of them brought home-made krathongs (the rafts to be floated) from their homes to launch into the sea, simultaneously praying to the Water Goddess. The traffic along the roads beside the beaches was virtually gridlocked, whilst the regular and volunteer police were busily engaged attending to the welfare and security of the revellers.

Several vendors brought with them the natural components, such as the leaf rafts, incense, flowers and candles, necessary to make the krathongs for sale on the footpaths along the beach roads. The prices ranged from Bt30-200 according to their sizes and attractiveness. Both the natural and artificial krathongs were well received by the customers, both locals and tourists, who flocked to the seashore to launch their festive rafts in the hope of receiving good luck and to banish bad luck and for couples, the faith that they would stay together in the year to come as predicted by the drift of their joint krathongs.

On a cautionary note, Pol.Lt.Col. Klitsakorn Thongin, Pattaya Police Deputy Superintendent, announced that due to accidents with firecrackers and fireworks in previous years, it had been decided to ban them this year, with warning of prosecution to sellers and the buyers who disregarded the ban. As regards children, Pol.Lt.Col. Klitsakorn reminded parents to take special care of their offspring as there had been incidents in previous years where children had drowned in the sea. He also cautioned that children should be accompanied by responsible adults or guardians to prevent them being tempted to commit crimes. In addition, he warned tourists to be vigilant as there could well be thieves lurking among the crowds.
