Cambodia 30th May 2010 [Pattaya Daily News] After struggling for the last two and a half years to adapt to family life and society Rochom P’ngieng now 29 years old has disappeared back into the forest leaving behind her distraught parents who had long given up hope of seeing either one of their daughters again. Rochom P’ngieng first disappeared into the thick hilly jungle in 1989 when she was just 7 years old along with her sister who has never been found, whilst herding water buffalo in the province of Ratanakkiri, 400 miles north – east of Phnom Penh.

Rochom emerged from the jungle naked, scared and filthy in February 2007 and was caught while she was stealing food from a farmers’ lunchbox. She was identified by a scar on her arm by her parents and welcomed back into the family. Attempts to reintegrate her failed with her preferring to crawl instead of walking, refusing to wear clothes and making no progress with language skills. She had already made several attempts to return to the forest where she grew up apparently alone before finally disappearing for the second time.

Her father Sal Lou a policeman said his daughter had been making a little progress and even helped to pick vegetables the day before, but on Tuesday evening she stripped off her clothes and ran from the house without any warning, back into the forest. The appearance of the ‘jungle girl’ held Cambodia’s interest referring to her as the “half animal girl”, because of her hunched look and grunting animal sounds.

Mr. Lou blamed the second disappearance of his daughter on “forest spirits” and has enlisted the help of a fortune teller to help in the search of her. He is now saving up for an offering of one ox, one pig, one chicken, and four jugs of wine which the mystic has assured him will bring back his daughter. Local rights group AD Hoc believe that the reason for her inability to reintegrate was stress, believing her to have suffered traumatic events that have affected her ability to talk.

A Cambodian non governmental organisation believes that a girl so young would be unable to survive in a jungle alone and that she may have been brought up in captivity. Neighbors and local authorities have been helping the family with the search, but the forest of Ratanakkiri is among Cambodia’s wildest and most isolated in the area.
